DESCRIPTION: 

About the Position 
The Public Works, Water Resources Department has openings for 20 Temporary Maintenance Worker I positions. Applications received under this recruitment will be considered for ALL positions. Applicants only need to submit one application. These temporary positions will last no more than 6 months.

Each operations section below will recruit and select candidates based on operational needs. Start dates vary from section to section. Available positions are:
  • Streets Operations – 6 positions (CDL Required-Anticipated start: 4/3/2017)
  • Signs & Markings – 2 position (Anticipated start: 5/1/2017)
  • Storm/Wastewater Operations – 2 positions (CDL Required-Anticipated start: 4/3/2017)
  • Pump Station Operations – 2 positions (Anticipated start: 3/20/2017 and 4/17/2017)
  • Drinking Water Operations – 1 position (Anticipated start: 4/17/2017)
  • Environmental Services-Vegetation Crew – 7 positions (Anticipated start: 4/17/2017 to 5/1/2017)
Ideal Candidate Profile
  • One year general work experience. Background in drinking water, stormwater, wastewater, signs and markings, or streets preferred.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively as a part of a team.
  • Ability to use tact and good judgment in responding to questions from citizens and the general public.
  • A positive "can do" attitude; takes the initiative to get the work done.
  • Take direction well, fast learner, and good attitude.
  • Adaptable to changing work environments.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES: 

The essential functions of this position include but are not limited to:

Streets Operations:
  • Perform basic vegetation control by operating various hand and power tools, including mowers, edgers and weed eaters.
  • Assist with street repairs by shoveling material and operating hand and power tools.
  • May drive dump truck or truck and trailer.
  • Assist with litter removal for special events.
  • May operate roller, back hoe or street sweeper.
Signs and Markings:
  • Perform basic sign maintenance, including sign cleaning and vegetation pruning and removal using various hand and power tools.
  • Assist with pavement marking repair and installation.
  • Remove vegetation, weeds, moss and other debris from median islands and traffic curbs.
  • Clean and paint traffic curbs.
Stormwater/Wastewater Operations:
  • Entry-level position that performs general maintenance and repair of the City's utilities including Storm and Surface Water and Wastewater.
  • Performs basic maintenance at storm and wastewater facilities, including; pruning, vegetation control, litter removal, fertilizing, and transplanting plants.
  • Operation of hand tools and power tools including but not limited to; mowers, edgers, blowers, weed eaters, jackhammers, rotary hammers, whackers, drills, reciprocating saws, portable pumps, chop saws, and may be trained on other specialized equipment.
  • May assist operations and maintenance crews.
Pump Stations Operations:
  • Perform maintenance and repair duties at the City's pump station sites, including, mowing lawns, and other general grounds maintenance.
  • Painting indoor and outdoor facilities (some could be located in confined spaces).
  • Assist Maintenance Technicians in their field activities.
Drinking Water Operations:
  • Entry-level position that performs general maintenance and repair of the City's drinking water utilities.
  • Performs basic maintenance at drinking water facilities, including; pruning, vegetation control, litter removal, fertilizing, and transplanting plants.
  • Operation of hand tools and power tools including but not limited to; mowers, edgers, blowers, weed eaters, jackhammers, rotary hammers, whackers, drills, reciprocating saws, portable pumps, chop saws, and may be trained on other specialized equipment.
  • May assist operations and maintenance crews.
Environmental Services-Vegetation Crew:
  • Landscape maintenance such as mowing, weeding, pruning, use of small equipment and hand tools.
  • Site restoration including invasive weed removal, site preparation, soil amendment, and tree and shrub planting.
  • General maintenance and upkeep of equipment and light duty vehicles to be used in the field.
  • Operating equipment in all types of weather and conditions.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS: 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • One-year general work experience required. Experience in specialty area (i.e. repair, maintenance, vegetation control, etc.) preferred.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor and work outdoors in heavily trafficked areas, in all types of weather, and on all types of surfaces.
  • Skill in using of a wide variety of power and hand tools, equipment, and machinery used in vegetation management.
  • Use good judgment in the operation of potentially dangerous equipment and while working at potentially hazardous work sites. Maintain constant awareness of hazards and continuously apply safe work habits and practices.
  • Listen to, remember, and apply work directions, instructions, information, and practices in daily communication with supervisors and co-workers.
  • Safely drive and operate heavy and light duty vehicles and equipment such as pickup trucks, off-road service and transport vehicles, and other related conveyances.
  • Demonstrated punctual, regular and reliable attendance is required.
  • Follow appropriate safety procedures.
Special Requirement:
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License with Class B Commercial Driver's License may be required for some positions. Class A Commercial Driver's License with endorsements may be preferred.
  • Washington State Flagger's Certification is preferred.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: 

Contacts:
  • Maintenance Workers I have daily contact with other crew members for the purpose of work coordination.
  • However, City crews often work in highly visible locations and may be required to respond to questions from interested citizens.
  • It is important for all employees to respond to citizens with tact and patience.
  • If questions cannot be answered on-site, the worker is responsible for referring the citizen to the Lead Worker or other Department staff for assistance.
Supervision:
  • None.
Accountability:
  • The employee is accountable for performing assigned tasks in a quality, timely, efficient manner.
Working Conditions: (Working conditions will vary by assignment.)
  • Maintenance Workers may work in hazardous areas, including street surfaces, rights-of-way, medians, ditches, pits and underground vaults; and around heavy equipment or potentially dangerous tools.
  • Assignments may be outside and may occasionally require work in inclement weather and/or dirty, wet noisy or cramped work sites.
  • This position requires the physical ability to perform manual tasks, and mobility to navigate all types of surfaces and terrain.
